Certified Property Manager
The Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) was formed in 1933 by a group of property managers. They formed IREM as a subsidiary group of the National Association of REALTORS (NAR). IREM offers not only opportunities for property managers to meet to share ideas but also offers programs to instruct those coming into the business. Currently, all those wishing to join IREM must satisfy education and experience requirements and must pass examinations given or approved by IREM. They are then awarded the designation of Certified Property Manager (CPM) in recognition of their professional status as property managers and their affiliation with IREM. The institute grants qualified management firms the designation of Accredited Management Organization (AMO). Those who specialize in the management of residential properties can pursue the designation Accredited Residentual Manager (ARM).
For training building maintenance personnel and facility managers, BOMI has developed courses of study for Systems Maintenance Administrations (SMA) and Facilities Management Administrators. To promote professionalism in the specialized field of retail property management, International Council of Shopping Centers has developed a series of courses that lead to the certified Shopping Center Manager.
